Time to Get Serious About This Club
Ok, so I’ve undeservedly neglected SMCSTL. In my defense I did just become a daddy. Anyway, it’s time to get serious about this club.
It’s become abundantly clear that we need structure and I could use some help maintaining the club. So without further adieu ado (thanks Reem), here is an idea for organizing the group.
The plan is to position volunteers as knowledge leaders in each segment of social media. This way we could track new strategies and technology in the space much more effectively. The following list is one suggestion for segmenting social media:
- Blogs (blogging, blogger outreach and blogging technology)
- Social Networks (Facebook, Myspace and other niche networks)
- Social News Aggregators (Digg, Mixx and Reddit)
- Social Bookmarking (StumbleUpon, Delicious and Furl)
- Social Media Analytics (Blogpulse, Yahoo Pipes)
- Micromedia (Twitter, Pownce and Utterz)
- Answer Portals (Askville, Yahoo! Answers)
We could also use volunteers in various administrative roles:
- Recruitment
- Event Planning
- Speaker Acquisition
- Education Director
- Webmaster
- Group Manager
I see no reason we can’t have more that one person in each position, so if one (or more) of these positions strikes your fancy please call it out. Please feel free to voice your opinions and suggestions as well.
UPDATE: We have a network set-up on ning as discussed at our last gathering.

I would be more than happy to help out with the blogging related stuffs. I am pretty sure there are a couple of people who would be interested in this as well, so any help I can offer in conjunction with them would be fun!

Hi Tanner, timing is perfect - I just reached out to Andrew Nagy trying to see where STL is and what you needed from the ‘mother ship’ to help out here.
Shoot me an email [you have it now from this post] and I can bring you up to date on what we and the other cities are doing to help bring structure to everything.
Cheers - and more importantly - congrats on the birth of your baby!

Tanner, may I suggest an opportunity that is possibly overlooked? How about ‘Using Social Media in Business’. I am personally very intrigued and could see value in speaking to the topic of how small and large business can gain exposure, market share and increased revenue via social media. I, of course, would volunteer for this post.

@Melody - Thanks for offering. I would suggest starting a Blogger group in our spiffy little ning network to gather fellow bloggers interested in examining the social aspects of the trade.
@Lori - I’m open to that idea. Looks like a very collaborative model. Let’s start a discussion about coordinating such an event at our new ning network!
@DonK - Great idea! I would guess that a majority of members are involved in social media to strategically leverage it for business. Run with the idea, and feel free to use our new ning network as a tool for collaboration.

I’d be more than happy to help out with Micromedia and Social Networks.
Glad to hear you are doing okay and about the new baby.
